Kőszeg

The castle and museum of Kőszeg

The exact date of the construction of the castle is not known, however, we can presume that it was already standing in the 13th century. Excavations undertaken on the area of the northern and north-eastern courtyard (lead by Imre Holl) undermine this assumption. The walls with battlements were erected at the beginning of the 16th century. The town and the castle were an organic unit, from the 13th to the 18th century. This can be seen from the northern tower.

Exhibitions in the castle:

· ‘The siege plagued town and castle’

· ‘The free king’s town’

· ‘Viniculture and wine making’

· ‘Book about the “Coming of the Grape” ‘

· ‘Cultural life of Kőszeg’

· Historic portrait gallery of Győző Somogyi
